The Ford Mustang is manufactured by the Ford Motor Company.  The Mustang was based on the Ford Falcon and production began on March 9th 1964.  It was introduced on April 17, 1964 at the New York World's Fair and in September 1964 it was used in the James Bond movie Gold Finder.  On April 16, 1964 all three American television networks gave it media exposure.  Not a bad start for the little pony car.

The Ford Mustang was Donald N. Frey's baby, manager of Ford productions at the time.  Lee Iacocca for division general manager was in full support of the project.  The prototype for the Mustang was a two seater, mid engine roadster but was later redesigned by John Oros and David Ash as a four seater.

The very successful pony car was in disfavor by 1970 two to the enlargement of the Mustang over the years and a gas prices.  As the population started seeking smaller more fuel efficient compact cars Ford released the new 1974 Mustang II.  The the Mustang two was based on the Ford Pinto a subcompact car, which could compete with cars like the Toyota Celica.  It was introduced two months before the so called energy crisis of 1973 and first year sales reached 385,993 for the first 12 months which almost equaled the numbers for the original Mustang at 418,812 for the same time frame.

The Mustang was redesigned again for 1979.  It was a larger Fox platform based on the 1978 Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr.  The interior was restyled for a more comfortable fit of four people, larger motor bay and larger trunk.  The new design included styles such as a coupe and a hatchback.  A convertible Mustang was introduced in 1983 with trim offerings of XL and GT, the 1984 to 86 turbocharged "SVO" the 1993 Cobra and Cobra R.

The mustang took on a major redesign in the 1980 and answer to dwindling sales and predictions of increasing gas prices.  It started out based on the Mazda MX-6 but the front wheel drive and no V8 option outraged Mustang enthusiast, which inundated Ford with letters of objection.  That along with gas prices actually dipping to record lows led to the Ford probe being the basis for the new design.

In 1994 the Ford Mustang was redesigned one more time.  It had been 15 years since the Mustang had been through a major redesign.  The design code name was SN-95.  The new look can be accredited to Patrick Schiavone, his new design was so good the mustang was named Motor Trend magazine's car of the year for 1994 its third since award since the Mustangs inception.  In 1999 that little Mustang received some new styling with larger wheel arches, better body works and sharper condors.

At the North American International Auto Show in 2004 Ford introduced another complete redesign of the Mustang, based on the D2C.  The new design was codenamed S-197.  The new design was directed by chief engineer Hau Thai-Tang and exterior designer Sid Ramnarace.  This new Mustang drew inspiration from the older Mustangs of the 1960s and early 70s most notably the 1969 and 1970 models.  Senior vice president of design J.Mays refer to it as a "retro-futurism".  The unique retro coupe styling of the 2005 Mustang complemented its muscle car status with a weight to power ratio of 11.5:1.  The Auto Alliance International plant in Flatrock Michigan is currently manufacturing the new Mustang.
